Whispering Island | Update Log 2

Hello Community, After a long time, it is finally time for the Whispering Island | Update Log 2.

In this post we will list up the current progress of the game: Whispering Island. As announced in Update Log 1, you will soon be able to play the first demo on Itch.io and give your opinion and feedback. After this, the logs will be available on both Itch.io and this page.

Please note that the video footage was taken at an early stage and does not yet provide a reasonable user experience for everything.


Overview

Obtaining Resource

Trees and stones currently spawn at fixed spawn points on each island. If you mine a resource until it respawns, you will receive a bonus to the number of items you get.

After mining a tree or stone, a respawn timer will appear. When this timer expires, the resource can be mined again. It is not currently possible to completely remove a resource from a spawn point, but this will be possible in the future to allow more space for building.

Resource Processing – Conveyor Belts

Another key feature of Whispering Island is the automation and processing of available resources. The faster you can get the basic resources, the easier it will be to produce the complex and advanced resources needed to feed the island through quests.

Farms can produce resources and deliver them to Conveyor Belts. Conveyors can also feed resources back into machines. If the conveyor belt is connected to a processing machine, such as a furnace, it will process the resource further, for example into charcoal.

Building System

The building system is still at an early stage, but it currently fulfils the most important aspects, such as collision detection on the ground and with walls.

The round conveyor belt corners in “‘Resource Processing – Conveyor Belts” are not yet possible due to the current building system.

Questing

The basis for creating and completing quests has been implemented. As The Island is hungry, there is also a timer by which quest items must be delivered. This is rather redundant at the moment as there is no win/loss screen yet.

Inventory – Crafting – Save/Load System

An inventory to keep track of your items. The inventory is currently drag-and-drop so you can sort items however you like. Later on, you can put the resources directly into the machines or chests instead of the conveyor belts. That’s why it was important to have this functionality already implemented.

The crafting menu is simple and self-explanatory. If the items are available in the inventory, the resources are displayed in white. If they are not in the inventory, they are shown in red.

Saving and loading the player save is already available for the core elements: Inventory, resource respawn timer, player position and purchased islands.

The next step would be the storage and loading of machines and conveyors which have been set up.

The next Steps

The most important thing is that the first demo comes after Itch.io, so that we can get proper feedback. But before that, we still have a few things on our to-do list to make sure the demo is appealing and playable for players.
